GARETH EMERY
Gareth Thomas Rhys Emery better known as Gareth Emery, GTR, Rue De Gar, Runaway. The English Electronic dance music producer and DJ was born on 18th July, 1980. He was born in Southampton, England. He has been the highest ranked British DJ in DJ's Magazine's annual Top 100 poll since 2009 at rank #7. Even though Gareth Emery was born in Southampton, England, he has a Welsh heritage too. Till the age of 26, Gareth Emery lived in Southampton and then relocated to Manchester where runs a night and a record label called Garuda. Gareth Emery has passed out from University of Warwick with a degree in politics. He also supports Southampton Football Club and is trained in classic piano. He played guitar in a punk band in the mid-nineties before getting involved in electronic music. Emery's style as described by him as simple but effective is a distinctive production style inclusive of Trance, House and Progressive. Although he is described as a Trance DJ. Though he has contradicted this by stating that he simply plays good music regardless of genre.
Emery released his debut Nervous Breakdown in early 2002, which was a white label remix of The Shrink's classic. Judge Jules from BBC Radio 1 broadcasted the track live from the Mardi Gras Festival is February 2002 which bought Gareth to the attention of the Electronic Music Community.
However his third release : GTR - Mistral is considered as the track which launched his career. He created the track in a course of a holiday of two weeks in Provence with the purely help of his laptop.
Emery received support from world's top DJ's including Armin van Buuren, Tiesto and Ferry Corsten and Paul van Dyk also debuted the track live on the radio during the Nature One festival, 2002.
The track also received a lot of positive reviews from Mixmag, DJ Magazine and Muzik. Gareth Emery's rank kept changing every year in DJ Mag's Top 100 poll making him a better DJ and a better rank holder every year. In 2006 #34, in 2007 #31, in 2008 #23, in 2009 #9, in 2010 #7.
A total of four music CD'S were released by Emery in his career : The Five AM Sessions (2005), The Podcast Annual (2007), The Sound Of Garuda (2009) and The Sound Of Garuda: Chapter 2 (2011). He released his debut album Northern Lights which was released in 2010 and achieved considerable success reaching to no.1 in the US iTunes dance chart. "Sanctuary", on the most successful tracks of Emery was also featured in this album. The song was also voted as the 2nd biggest track of 2010 by Armin Van Buuren's A State Of Trance radio show listeners. Later, it became the most played record of 2011 on US Sirius XM Radio dance station BPM. A remixed album named Northern Lights Re-Lit with remixes of various DJ's including Arty, Hardwell, Giuseppe Ottaviani, Lange and many more was released in 2011. He also collaborated with Britney Spears, Armin van Buuren and Above and Beyond for various remixes since 2002.
Emery co-owner now defunct label Five AM from 2003 to 2008 under which some of his big hits were released like Mistral, This is That, More than Anything. Later in 2008, Emery announced the quit of Five AM and start of his own record label Garuda which was completely owned by him. The first release of Garuda was Emery's own record Exposure / Metropolis in May 2009.
Since then, Gareth has released all his records through Garuda. His record label is named after a bird like creature which he became aware of while touring Indonesia. It is a bird like creature from Hindu and Buddhist Mythology. The label has also released records by many other artists like M.I.K.E., Blake Jarrell, Tritonal and Ben Gold. Manchester Superclub Sankeys was voted DJ Mag's No. 1 club in the world in 2010 occasionally had club nights run by Emery's label. Few guests of the club were top DJ's like Sander Van Doorn, Markus Schulz, Above & Beyond and Ferry Corsten.
Emery produced the 'Gareth Emery Podcast' in March 2006. The podcast is generally 60 minutes long. It featured 15 tracks in a radio show format. It covered a wide range of genres. Initially fortnightly but now its weekly broadcasted. It was nominated thrice for the "Best Podcast" at Miami Winter Music Conference's International Dance Music Awards. It is also considered as one of the first dance music podcasts.
Emery launched his radio show in North America in July 2012, Named : 'Gareth Emery Presents' on the Sirius XM Channel Electric Area (Channel 52). The show airs at 5pm ET Fridays and repeat at 8pm ET Tuesdays.
